The definition of organometallic compounds, along with their exceptions, is also covered. I discuss the classification of organometallic compounds at an advanced level, which is highly useful for competitive examinations. In organometallic compounds, ligands are classified based on their hapticity. Therefore, an introduction to hapticity, along with its classification, is also discussed in this video. The 18-Electron Rule and the Effective Atomic Number (EAN) Rule, which are effective tools for predicting the stability and reactivity of organometallic compounds, are explained at an advanced level. I also illustrate the calculation of the 18-Electron Rule and the Effective Atomic Number using several suitable examples involving different metals and ligands. Additionally, I have tabulated a list of ligands along with their electron counts and corresponding justifications, helping students understand why a particular ligand donates a specific number of electrons. Furthermore, I provide a tabulated list of organometallic compounds that do not conform to the Effective Atomic Number Rule.
