In December of 2020, the Sierra Northern began running two separate trains “Hill Jobs” between Oakdale to Standard on the same day. This was something rarely seen on the Sierra since the Hill Job is generally only run twice a week with one train per day. Sierra did this for a couple weeks during December of 2020. The only thing I could figure based off of limited conversations with Sierra train crews was that the demand for transportation of propane increased during this time period and Sierra had to run two trains per day to keep up with that demand. The Sierra, at least on the “Hill Job” can only transport up to five loaded or empty propane carrying tank cars on one train. So, if there was a demand to transport more than five cars between Oakdale and Standard on the same day, two trains would be required. The only thing I can figure is the condition rating of the tracks on this stretch of line limits the amount of hazardous materials cars that can be transported on a train? If any viewers know of a different reason, please add a comment to the video.😊 in order to pull this off, the Sierra pulled out their old EMD GP9’s # 131 & 132 for extra power on the extra trains. During this video #131 is shown. The first train of the day is powered by ex UPY Genset #56 and GP9 #131. The GP9 is painted in the full yellow and black Sierra Northern paint scheme, while the Genset #56 is only partially painted in Sierra Northern scheme, on the cab that is. I must admit that as a true railfan, hearing the engine of an EMD locomotive is a much more pleasant sound than a Genset!😀 the second train is powered by ex UPY Genset #51, which is also partially painted in Sierra colors, and by #52, the first generation of Sierra’s Gensets, which was built by the Sierra, and is also in their full paint scheme. I follow both trains on their eastbound journey from Jamestown to Standard. Luckily the trains were running about 40 minutes apart, so I could catch both of them. I’ll be honest, this was not planned as I originally had no idea two trains were running on this day, and only came upon the second train by accident. 😁 I also follow both trains westbound between Standard and Jamestown. Since this time period I can only count on one hand how many times I have seen the Sierra run two “Hill Jobs” in one day, so definitely a rarity. Also, after this time period, Sierra stopped using the GP9s and purchased several more Genset locomotives to power their freight trains. In my opinion this makes the video a great catch as it was the last of the days for the GP9s on the Sierra. Please remember to hit like, subscribe and add comments. Enjoy as I follow both trains on their journey.
