If you’re familiar with Irish whiskey, you’ll have heard of single pot still whiskey, but is it really all that different from Single Malt? Let’s find out! Single Pot still whiskey, if you’re not familiar, is the style of whiskey unique to Ireland, and it’s made with a mixed mashbill. While there is a campaign on the go right now to change the rules, at present, to qualify as a pot still whiskey, it has to be made with at least 30% malted barley, at least 30% unmalted barley, and at most 5% other grains. Some distilleries split the difference and go 50/50, some go 70/30, and others will use the other grains to allow each brand to do something different and unique to them. Malt whiskey on the other hand is made of 100% malted barley, so there’s no room for experimentation, so on paper, the styles are different, but HOW different? Well that’s the plan today, I’ve got two whiskeys from Dingle Distillery which are both the same age, went into the same casks for the same amount of time, and the only real difference is the mashbill. The single malt is 100% malted barley, and the single pot still is 60% malted barley and 40% unmalted barley. So let’s get them into the glass and put single malt vs single pot still, to see if they’re really all that different!
