Downtown Art Center in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi is honored to host "Hoʻopuka: To Emerge—The Love of Hula," a showcase of art that has been inspired by Hawaiʻi’s native dance, open for public viewing August 3-28 at DACʻs Second Floor Exhibition Space at 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave. The show’s name, “Hoʻopuka,” was chosen by one of the participating artists, Kumu Hula Auliʻi Mitchell. “Hoʻopuka” is to emerge,” Kumu Auliʻi says. “It is the first dance the hula students learn to enter the presence of Laka. Hoʻopuka e ka la ma ka hikina. Let the artists that love hula emerge!” The exhibition features the following talented Hawaiʻi-based artists: The John and Kate Kelly Estate Collection Kumu Hula Auliʻi Mitchell Nancy Vilhauer Lauren Okano Jackie Mild Lau Floyd K.
