Test trains on the Mernda rail extension; Melbourne's newest railway line - Metro Trains Melbourne

On the 2nd July 2018 the first train visited Mernda since 1959. X'trapolis train 231M-1416T-232M-932M-1666T-931M became the first train to use the new Mernda Rail Extension; a $600 million 8km extension of the South Morang line, featuring three new stations at Middle Gorge (known as Marymead during construction), Hawkstowe and Mernda. In this video we see the test train at multiple locations along the new line, including outside Mernda station, Hawkstowe station and South Morang. The line has been built to serve some of Melbourne's growing northern suburbs, and was built on the former alignment of the Whittlesea line, which closed beyond Lalor in 1959. The line was reopened and electrified as far as Epping in 1964, but the rest of the line sat dormant for decades. Back in those days Epping, South Morang and Mernda were small country towns. By the end of the 20th century however population growth and urban sprawl has seen these areas become highly populated suburbs of Melbourne. The line was extended from Epping to South Morang in 2012, however this wasn't enough to serve the new areas of Mernda and Doreen, with traffic congestion in the area (especially along Plenty Road) a major concern. After successful community advocacy the government committed to extending the rail line to Mernda. There's no official opening date for the new line as of yet, however rumors going around is that it may open in late August.
