Ruins of Yoron Castle

The ruins of Yoron Castle, located on a hill of the island, were built about 600 years ago by the third son of King Kitayama, who ruled the northern part of Okinawa from Nakijin Castle. The construction is said to have started in 1405. However, it is said to have remained unfinished since Hokuzan, the original owner of the castle, was destroyed in 1416 by Shohashi, who later founded the Ryukyu Kingdom. The castle is characterised by its size of over 20,000 square metres and by its clever use of natural cliffs with a height difference of over 70 metres. It is said that the size of the castle is comparable to that of Shuri Castle and Nakijin Castle in Okinawa, where kings and princes reside. From the west to the south of the ruins of Yoron Castle, there are cliffs and large rocks exposed at a height of nearly 90 metres, formed by faults. The cliffs are used as a natural wall and the stone walls between the cliffs and the huge rocks make the castle highly defensible. There is also a spring below the cliffs which provides a source of water, showing that the castle was built with great skill and understanding of the island's topography. It is also said that the whole castle resembles a prostrate dragon, and on the north side of the castle you can see a stone pile in the shape of a dragon's head.
