This is the site of the mansion where the village mayor, Osuke Ueno, was born and lived in the 1880s. This house shows how a wealthy family lived in those days. For example, there are stone walls made of Ryukyu limestone, a partition gate, a group of fukugi trees surrounding the house, and a stone pigsty. In addition, there was a well and a hand-water basin in the house, which were used to store rainwater, which was rare in those days when there was no water supply. From an early age, Osuke loved to study. At the age of 21, he became a schoolteacher, and in 1880, at the age of 27, he became mayor of the village. He devoted himself to the development of the island, including the construction of school buildings, the shipping business, the establishment of a village medical system, the establishment of a police station, and the revival of the Jugoya and Sinigu festivals. However, in 1897 and 1898, the island was hit by two major typhoons, followed by a severe drought and an epidemic. The island was in dire need of food, and many people died of starvation. In order to solve the poverty and famine of the islanders, Osuke decided to move them to the Japanese mainland. He persuaded the anxious islanders to apply, and in 1899, with his son-in-law as the leader of the group, they moved to Kuchinotsu in Nagasaki Prefecture. He then resigned from his post as mayor, which he had held for 21 years, to become the leader of the third group of 400 people to emigrate to Kuchinotsu in 1901. The immigrants endured hard labour and discrimination, such as loading coal at the Miike Coal Mine, but thanks to the efforts of Osuke, housing for the immigrants was built and they supported each other to overcome the rough times. Osuke was instrumental in establishing the Yoron imigrant communities in Kuchinotsu and Omuta. He passed away in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1916 at the age of 63.
