SWIFT's rival? China's CIPS expands global reach at Shanghai Finance Expo

Six foreign banks, including Africa’s Standard Bank, joined China’s Cross-border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) at the 2025 China International Finance Exhibition, marking CIPS’s first direct participants from Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Held alongside the Lujiazui Forum, the 50,000-sqm exhibition attracted over 300 financial institutions, including 40 foreign firms – its largest edition yet. CIPS now links 170 direct and 1,500 indirect participants across 186 countries.
