Phillip Sear plays an 1879 piece by the German pianist, flautist, and composer Wilhelm Popp (1828–1903). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Appointed court pianist and flautist at the court of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1854, Popp was sacked three years later for returning late from a tour of Russia. He went to Hamburg, where he was briefly imprisoned on a charge of having stolen a flute from his former employer. From 1867 he played flute in the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He is best known for his considerable output of flute music— he was known as the 'Czerny of the flute'— but he was apparently also a virtuoso pianist, and wrote a few pieces for that instrument, including this one. "The title refers to the Myosotis flower, a symbol of remembrance, true love, and faithfulness in German Romantic tradition. In 19th-century lieder and ballads, the flower often represents a plea for memory across distance or after death. In song, the text typically associated with "Vergissmeinnicht" settings (like Schober's poem used by Schubert) is a "flower ballad" that tells a story of lost innocence or a lover's plea.
