Bodying in Soccer Video on How to Shield the Ball: • How to Shield the Ball Link to Soccer Defending book: ttps://amzn.to/33i7kvZ Bodying in soccer is also known as shoulder tackling or shoulder charging. I’m going to cover the rules on it, how to do it, and a great drill to practice it. Understand that some leagues have a “no-charge” rule. However, according to the United States Soccer Federation, there are fair charges in soccer. A fair charge is shoulder to shoulder, elbow against the body for the side that’s contacting the other player Each player needs to have at least one foot on the ground and both players must be attempting to gain control of the ball. The amount of force allowed is relative to the age and experience of the players, but it should not be excessive. Understand that whether there is excessive force is determined only by the referee of that game. Excessive force usually results from a player sprinting at full speed and then shoulder checking an opponent who is standing still. However, a player’s natural abilities like speed, strength, height, and weight may differ between players. This may result in one of the players ending up on the ground even though there was no foul committed. Referees aren’t required to expect that larger or faster players take it easy on a smaller opponent. Additionally, a fair shoulder charge can be directed toward the back of the shoulder if the opponent is shielding the ball. However, it cannot be done dangerously and never directly to the middle of the back along your spine. If you are ever checked directly in the back, then consider falling over because you will most likely get a foul called. Also, your arms cannot push off or hold the opponent. However, you can use them for balance. Here are some tips to consider when shoulder tackling. Tip 1 on the Shoulder Check in Soccer – Make sure to flex (Flex my bicep/arm when saying this) Bring your elbow to your side and then flex your entire arm and shoulder muscles. Tip 2 on the Shoulder Tackle Soccer Move – Momentum matters Standing still reduces your power so a few steps of momentum prior to the shoulder charge will make it easier to win. However, remember that you can’t use too much force if the other player is just standing still. Tip 3 on How to Body Someone in Soccer – Lean into it Leaning over a bit when doing a shoulder tackle will lower your center of gravity and make it easier for you to push them off the ball. Also, having a few step run up and leaning into the shoulder charge will allow you to be more forceful when learning how to body in soccer. And Tip 4 - Follow Through I also played hockey for 11 years growing and it took me a long time to figure out why my hockey checks were so weak. It was because I wasn’t following through. Just like when shooting a driven shot where you strike through the ball and land past the ball, you need to make sure that you drive through the defender with your shoulder. Don’t just stop your force when you make contact. Only stop after you have the advantage to gain possession of the ball. Pro-Tip: Pick your battles wisely. Try to shoulder tackle players that are your size or smaller. Preferably smaller. I speak from experience here. I’m 6 feet tall and 195 lbs. I have an okay win percentage against players 20 or more pounds than me. However, I can’t think of a single time I’ve lost a shoulder charge battle with a player that was smaller than me. By the way, I’m Dylan Joseph. Now, let’s discuss a shoulder charge soccer drill to work on bodying in soccer called “Penned In”. However, I don’t advise too much practicing of shoulder checking. It can definitely damage a player’s confidence amongst their peers and it may lead to an injury, like a dislocated a shoulder. So grab some cones and make a four-yard by four-yard square and put three or four players inside it. Stand on one of the corners and pass the ball into a random player and start counting out loud. If that player can keep possession of the ball inside the square for five seconds and then pass it back to you, they earn a point. If they are tackled, another player has to try and achieve the same outcome with the ball. If the ball goes out of bounds, then play another ball in. The players will have to shield the ball with their bodies and take shoulder-to-shoulder contact. If there isn’t enough contact, then make the square smaller shoulder tackle soccer drills.
