For my final feature of this week’s Dungeon Synth Sunday, let us tangle ourselves amongst the thorny aquatic bracken and gnarled undergrowth of French experimental dungeon electronica project, Percidae. A twelve track forage through a variety of styles, from dark ambient to dub and trap, through neoclassical strings and choirs to musique concrete field recording, gothic medieval heraldry to liquid drone and more, melding together into a cohesive journey of lucid visions, with track titles leading the listener through a fantastical landscape equal to the transportive musics that illustrate it. Released in digital and cassette formats through Condate Legacy last year, there are still a few copies of acid yellow tapes remaining from either artist or label, that will be well worth picking up for those of an experimentally-minded ear. John Martin was a British artist, who lived between 1789-1854, completing his final works just months before his death. Martin is best-known as a painter of religious subjects and fantastic compositions, with his distinctive dramatic scenes of apocalyptic destruction and biblical catastrophe. His paintings, typically vast landscapes and cityscapes peopled with a myriad of tiny figures, enjoyed great success, as did the engravings made from them.
