A barn owl fledgling returns to the top of the nest box at the University of Florida carrying a rat, likely received from its parents off camera. This behavior shows that the young owl is already capable of sustained flight while gripping prey — an important milestone toward independence. Barn owls (Tyto alba) gradually transition from being fed inside the nest to handling and transporting prey themselves. Successfully flying with a rodent demonstrates developing strength, coordination, and hunting readiness. These post-fledging stages are critical for survival and indicate healthy development within the nest box system. This video is meant to document the lives of wild animals so that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene but only document the lives of wild animals. (Quick science note) Fledgling barn owls initially rely on parents for food but must quickly develop the strength and coordination to carry prey during flight. Successfully transporting a rodent indicates strong wing muscles and progressing independence — a positive sign for survival. 🎥 Filmed by Charter Group Birdcams Led by Dr. Motti Charter from The Shamir Research Institute and the School of Environmental Studies, University of Haifa. #BarnOwl #WildlifeLivestream #OwlFledgling #NestBoxCam #PredatorEcology #UniversityOfFlorida
