Continued: Scripture: Psalm 51 -A psalm of David when the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. “1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. (Praise) 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. (Acceptance/Repentance) 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. (Glorify His holiness) 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 CREATE IN ME A PURE HEART, O GOD, AND RENEW A STEADFAST SPIRIT WITHIN ME. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 RESTORE TO ME THE JOY OF YOUR SALVATION AND GRANT ME A WILLING SPIRIT, TO SUSTAIN ME. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. (Conviction of the holy ghost) 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 MY SACRIFICE, O GOD, IS A BROKEN SPIRIT; A BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEART YOU, GOD, WILL NOT DESPISE. (Full petition to God) 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole;then bulls will be offered on your altar.” But what does true repentance look like? Thankfully, God has preserved examples of genuine repentance in the Bible. By studying them, we can draw valuable lessons and gain a fuller understanding of the kind of repentance that God honors. Who Was the First Person in the Bible to Repent? Repentance happens all over the Bible but have you ever wondered who was the first person in the Bible to repent? My guess is that the first people to repent in the Bible were Adam and Eve. They may have left the garden on rocky terms but if you continue reading you’ll learn real quick that they raised a family of God-fearers. Seth and Abel both lived rightly before God. Jacob shows us an example of true repentance when making things right between him and his brother Esau. We see repentance modeled by Judah after his actions against Tamar were brought to light. Joseph’s brothers demonstrates true repentance when they are reunited with Joseph and repent for selling him into slavery . REPENTANCE IS THE FIRST STEP OF RESTORING ANY RELATIONSHIP. It’s important to God which is reason enough for it to be important to us. But what is genuine repentance in the Bible? How do we go about it? Below are some examples of true repentance in the Bible (and false). True repentance (as you know) Starts in the heart and extends to our actions. A truly repentant person will usually accept just consequences. UNDERSTANDS THAT FORGIVENESS IS A GIFT THAT IS NOT OWED TO THEM (IT’S GIVEN BY GRACE). Truly repentant people will avoid trying to make sin sound less than it is. They’ll take responsibility for their action and do what they can to make it right. With false repentance the person may change their actions but still rebel in their heart. They may repents to escape consequences, but have little to no remorse nor consistency for their actions like Ahab False repentance comes with an attitude of entitlement. THE PERSON WILL OFTEN TRY TO MINIMIZE THE SIN THEY’RE IN AND EVEN LOOK FOR WAYS TO ESCAPE RESPONSIBILITY FROM IT. A key biblical example of mass Israelite repentance is the nation's response to the message of the prophet Ezra, WHICH INVOLVED PUBLIC CONFESSION, FASTING, MOURNING, AND A PLEA FOR FORGIVENESS AFTER THE EXILE. Another prominent example is King David, WHO EXPRESSED PROFOUND SORROW AND SOUGHT A CLEAN HEART AFTER HIS SIN with Bathsheba, as recorded in Psalm 51(above). Biblical examples: Ezra and the returned exiles: Confession and grief: After returning from Babylonian exile, Ezra saw that the people had intermarried with foreign women and were not following God's laws. He responded with profound grief, tearing his clothes and pulling his hair. Public acknowledgment: Repentance and reform: THE PEOPLE RESPONDED WITH A DAY OF FASTING, PUBLIC CONFESSION, AND A PLEDGE TO SEPARATE THEMSELVES FROM FOREIGN CUSTOMS AND COMMIT TO A NEW LIFE OF OBEDIENCE.
