Katacon 2021 Presentation with Nigel Thurlow. Toyota Kata and The Flow System.

Nigel Thurlow presents his 2021 talk for Katacon. In this talk he addresses leadership behaviors, insulting consulting, Learning to See and how problems are hidden in organizations, constraints and bottlenecks, OKRs and KPIs, and the evil of measures as targets. His introduces the concept of enabling constraints and reminds leaders about the gemba. He reveals the real history of PDCA and suggests an update the the way we view and use PDCA, something he calls Lean heresy. This session takes a deep dive into understanding the topics of deductive and inductive reasoning and why abductive reasoning is critical. This takes us into the Agile worlds and even the definition of 5 Why analysis. He weaves explanations of The Flow System with his experiences at Toyota, a view on Toyota Kata, and the universality of promised big frameworks as he moves us into complexity thinking and where distributed leadership and team science intersect. This provides a warning with something known as bounded applicability and the limitations of any tool or methodology.
