Date filmed: Friday the 1st of August 2025 Videos filmed between 13:40 and 14:40 Route: Midland Main Line Spondon (SPO) Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with Obstacle Detection (MCB-OD) Filming location: Station Road, Spondon (DE21 7BS) A busy Midland Mainline level crossing located in Spondon, a suburb of the city of Derby. In its current form, the level crossing dates back to an extensive renewal and re-modelling in 2018, and is scanned by an obstacle detection system comprising of LIDAR's and RADAR's which automatically prove it clear. There are a total of four alarms here, as well as six LED wigwags, the two extra ones of which are located incredibly high up as to be seen across a humped bridge on approach to the crossing, after which the road drops steeply to it. A variety of trains feature in this fairly lengthy video, including Cross Country services (new livery featured), East Midlands Railway regional and intercity services, a Class 153 'Visual Inspection Unit', and a rail-tour. This rail-tour had two locomotives at the front, one at the back, and was headed to Barrow Hill freight yard near Chesterfield and Sheffield. Multiple trips of this ran across this weekend, part of the various on-goings of the extensive 'The Greatest Gathering' event hosted nearby at Alstom's Litchurch Lane works at the start of August as part of the Railway's 200th anniversary celebrations.
