What is the MAS Museum all about? The MAS Museum was conceived as a place that centers on Antwerp, Belgium and its historical relationship with the rest of the world - including Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. In the beautiful Museum aan de Stroom, you will be able to enjoy vibrant history, stunning architecture, and a novel experience - all at once. The place hosts over 500 000 alternating museum pieces related to the history of the city, the port, the river, and the local culture. These include Congolese artifacts, visual art pieces from regional painters, celebration and ritual objects, maritime accessories, and photographs, sorted into tens of permanent and temporary exhibitions. The History of the MAS Museum Back in 1998, the city council of Antwerp declared the original idea of building the museum and collecting artifacts from various local institutions such as the Maritime Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. Anyway, its construction began as soon as the end of 2006, while the artifacts started arriving in 2010. Once it opened to the general public in 2011, the MAS Museum successfully substituted all of its precursors and quickly turned into a focal point for thousands of tourists fascinated by the cultural history of Antwerp. Nowadays, MOS welcomes an average of 650 000 visitors every year, operates thanks to approximately 140 volunteers, and has over 5700 square meters of functional exhibition space. It's a place where people, objects, and stories unite - because we have way too many unexpected things in common. The Architecture of the MAS Museum Another striking feature of the MAS Museum is the building itself. The 60-meter-high construction is exemplary for the postmodern Art Deco architecture and is placed where the Hanzehuis used to stand before the 19th century. The beautiful building is created by a combination of Indian red sandstone and curved glass panels that reflect the rippling waters of the nearby river. The effect is rather striking - MOS Museum looks like an animated object that vibes with the flow of Scheldt. At the top of the building, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view over the port and the river, grasping the magnificence of the place in full detail.
