Transition Tips is a series on CTI's Facebook Live. This Transition Tips session on Enhancing Independent Living Skills at Home is hosted by Judy Averill and Kelly Ligon. They share 10 tips to improve independent living skills at home for students with disabilities. Independent living is defined as “those skills or tasks that contribute to the successful independent functioning of an individual in adulthood” (Cronin, 1996). We often categorize these skills into the major areas related to our daily lives, such as housing, personal care, transportation, and social and recreational opportunities. Each student’s needs in the area of independent living are unique and should be determined through informal and formal age appropriate transitional assessments. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The VCU Center on Transition Innovations is funded by the Virginia Department of Education (881-APE62524-H027A170107).
