In this video, I discuss violence, abuse and neglect in residential aged care, in particular focusing on sexual assault of people with dementia. As an activist and independent researcher for the rights of people with dementia and all people living in residential care, this is a major issue. In the interim and final report of the Austrqlia Royal Commission into aged care, they estimated there are 50 sexual assaults in residential aged care every week, and the research is clear that most victims and survivors of sexual assault are women with dementia. This is unacceptable. People with dementia have the right not to be sexually assaulted, or to be abused, neglected or violated in any way, and if they are, they have the right to legal action against the perpetrator. It is our attitudes that make people with dementia vulnerable. If you do not understand this – you are part of the problem.
