This is the first video I have made, which is part of a free, three part online course about the effect environments can have on people living with dementia and how to make places more supportive for them. The aim of this video and the DTA training is to positively influence people who design buildings (e.g. architects and project managers) or who are running buildings (care staff and managers). Whilst many participants of this training will work in residential care, some may work in hospitals, retirement villages or community buildings. Some people may attend because they want to know about how to make their own homes be more supportive of independent living. In video 1, the first of three, I talk about the effect of dementia from the inside out. I hope this will give some insight into the challenges people with dementia face on a daily basis, and the need for a human rights approach to dementia, including in the design of buildings. Accessible communication is a new, and helpful, way of framing the need to adapt our language and our process of communication for people with cognitive disabilities – it’s also one aspect of cognitive ramping. Dementia enabling building designs are also crucial to supporting independence, and ensuring our human rights are being met.
