Intuitive Eating has gained attention recently as a way to "eat as you feel like eating". Whenever something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. While the ideas promoted by Intuitive Eating teach that you should stop regulating and tightly controlling what you eat in an effort to be happy and "healthy", we know that higher weight is definitely a risk factor for many disease states that are preventable. "The Myth of Comfort Eating" was a recent article in the New York Times which promotes Intuitive Eating. Most people who have had to work at losing weight are very familiar with the fact that stress often causes us to eat more and eat foods that are high in sugar and fats because they make us feel emotionally better, albeit for a short period of time. One of the teachings of Intuitive Eating that is correct is that you can and should enjoy eating. This does not have to mean however that you do not count your intake. Set your calorie count for breakfast, lunch and dinner so that you stay within the number needed to get your weight down slowly and steadily. But pick high nutrition foods and season them so that they are tasteful. Eliminate easy sources of high calorie loads (beverages are a common problem) so that you can enjoy your food choices. If you do need something to get you through when you feel hungry, then keep some lower calorie cereals (chocolate Special K or cheerios are great) with some milk on hand. This will be filling but won't overload you with calories. If you set a goal then your mind is going to focus on those things that will get you to your goal. Look for heathy recipes. Share them with friends. Be the person who helps to bring other people healthy habits. You're doing great!
