Take a relaxing stroll along The Strand, Southern California’s most iconic oceanfront path. This 4K POV walk captures the transition from the upscale, classic charm of Manhattan Beach to the more laid-back, surf culture of Hermosa Beach. Before the beach houses, this entire stretch was part of Rancho Sausal Redondo (the "Round Willow-Grove Ranch"), a massive Mexican land grant. In the early 1900s, Manhattan Beach was essentially a series of massive sand dunes. In fact, the sand was so plentiful that in the 1920s, much of it was shipped to Hawaii to help create the world-famous beaches of Waikiki! The Manhattan Beach Pier, built in 1920, is a California State Historic Landmark and holds the title of the oldest standing concrete pier on the West Coast. Designed by A.L. Harris, it was built to withstand the fierce storms that destroyed its predecessor, the "Iron Pier," in 1913. Look for the "Volleyball Walk of Fame" along the pier, honoring every winner of the Manhattan Beach Open since 1960. The Hermosa Beach pier was completed in 1964, replacing a 1914 wooden structure. In a quirky bit of local history, when the old Pacific Electric Red Car trolley system was retired in the 1960s, some of the cars were actually dumped into the ocean near the pier to create an artificial reef for local sea life.
