Naples is famous for its annual Holiday Boat Parade and authentic gondola tours, preserving a century-old dream of a Venetian escape on the Pacific coast. Established in 1903 by developer Arthur Parsons, Naples Island was a visionary project designed to transform the marshy wetlands of Alamitos Bay into the "Dreamland of Southern California." Inspired by the canals of Italy, Parsons dredged the tidal estuary to create three distinct islands—Naples, Treasure Island, and the Peninsula—separated by a mile of scenic waterways. The community originally attracted visitors via the Pacific Electric Red Cars, with early marketing featuring romantic gondola rides to sell the Mediterranean-style lifestyle.
