We haven't been around the Rhine so often, so this time we took a little trip to Ruedesheim am Rhein. Ruedesheim is a tourist attraction because of its picturesque landscape in the middle of vineyards on the Rhine. Most people took a cable car up to the Niederwalddenkmal, from where you have a unique view over the Rhine. However, we wanted to walk and took the path on foot through the countless wine fields to the St Hildegard Abbey. From there we finally walked to the Niederwalddenkmal. In this video, I visit two of the most iconic landmarks in Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany: the Abbey of St. Hildegard and the Niederwalddenkmal. Both sites are set above the Rhine Valley, surrounded by vineyards, and offer not only spectacular views but also deep cultural and historical significance. Together, they represent the unique blend of nature, spirituality, and history that defines the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Abbey of St. Hildegard (Abtei St. Hildegard) is a Benedictine convent that was founded in the early 20th century but dedicated to the memory of Hildegard of Bingen, the famous medieval abbess, composer, mystic, and polymath. Though the current abbey buildings are relatively modern, the site preserves her legacy and spirit. Walking around the abbey means experiencing both spiritual calm and the beauty of the surrounding vineyards. The abbey church is striking in its Romanesque Revival style, with high ceilings, mosaics, and a quiet interior that invites reflection. Outside, the location is just as impressive: perched above Rüdesheim, it provides sweeping views of the Rhine River, the rolling hills, and the neat rows of vines that stretch across the slopes. The nuns of the abbey continue a long tradition of winemaking, and the vineyards are very much a part of daily life here. Hiking or walking around the abbey grounds gives a sense of both history and living culture. From the abbey, the route continues toward the Niederwalddenkmal, one of Germany’s most important national monuments. Built between 1871 and 1883, the monument commemorates the founding of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War. At its center stands the massive statue of Germania, holding the imperial crown and sword, overlooking the Rhine Valley. The setting of the Niederwalddenkmal is as impressive as the monument itself. Rising high above the river on the Niederwald ridge, the site offers panoramic views over the Rhine gorge, the town of Bingen across the river, and the surrounding vineyards and forests. Standing here, it’s easy to see why the Rhine has inspired poets, painters, and travelers for centuries. The monument is not only a symbol of German history but also a place where the landscape and culture meet in one grand vista. The hike or walk between Abbey St. Hildegard and the Niederwalddenkmal is a highlight in itself. The trails pass through vineyards, meadows, and forest paths, offering a changing rhythm of open views and shaded sections. In autumn, the vineyards glow golden and red; in spring and summer, they are full of life and greenery. The combination of cultural landmarks and natural scenery makes the walk engaging and rewarding. Along the way, there are also smaller chapels, viewpoints, and rest spots, each adding variety to the experience. The sound of the river below, the sight of ships moving along the Rhine, and the occasional glimpse of castles on distant ridges all remind you that this is part of the larger story of the Rhine Valley. Visiting these two landmarks together gives a complete picture of the region. The Abbey of St. Hildegard reflects the spiritual, cultural, and agricultural traditions of the valley, tied to the figure of Hildegard of Bingen and the enduring presence of monastic life. The Niederwalddenkmal reflects the national history of Germany, standing as a monument to unity and strength. And surrounding both is the timeless beauty of the Rhine landscape, shaped by vineyards, forests, and flowing water.
