#Arshadnadeem #Javelinfinal #tokyoOlympic Tokyo Olympics: All Eyes On Neeraj Chopra In Men's Javelin Throw Final All eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra to deliver India's elusive Olympic medal in athletics and end a wait of over 100 years when he competes in the men's javelin throw final on Saturday. A pre-tournament medal contender, the 23-year-old Chopra fuelled country's expectations by topping the qualification round with a stunning first round throw of 86.59m. Three track and field athletes were part of the five-member Indian team at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium -- the other two being wrestlers. Since then, no Indian has won a medal in athletics. The International Olympic Committee still credits Norman Pritchard's 200m and 200m hurdles silver medals in the 1900 Paris Olympics to India though various research, including the records of then IAAF (now World Athletics), showed that he had competed for Great Britain. A farmer's son from Khandra village near Panipat in Haryana who took up athletics to shed flab, Chopra can script history by winning the elusive medal, which the likes of late Milkha Singh and PT Usha let it slip from their grasp in 1964 and 1984 editions. It was a morning Pakistan Athletics will remember for long as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem created history on Wednesday when he qualified for the final of javelin throw competition in the Tokyo Olympics. Arahad Nadeem is the first-ever Pakistani athlete to qualify for the final of any track and field event in the Olympics. He was placed in group B for the contest in which the athlete had to throw a minimum of 83.5m to directly qualify for the final. Only six athletes could do so, and Arshad was one of them while the rest of the six athletes advanced to the finals on basis of their respective farthest throw. In his first attempt, the 24-year-old Pakistani athlete could reach the 78.5m mark but in the second attempt, Arshad created history with a throw of 85.16m that also placed him on top of group B. This was overall the third-best throw in the contest after India’s Neeraj Chopra (86.65m) and Germany’s Johannes Vetter (85.64m). Pakistan's Asian Games bronze medallist Arshad Nadeem became the first athlete from the country to book his place in the Olympics final as he topped Group B of the javelin throw event with a 85.16m throw. The 24-year-old is among the top 12 javelin throwers now who will compete for the medals on Saturday, August 7 in the final. Arshad is the last athlete to be performing for Pakistan at the Olympics in Tokyo, hoping to get a medal and break the country’s 29-year-old medal-drought in the Olympics. Pakistan took their last medal in Olympics in the 1992 Barcelona Games. He is also the first Pakistani to directly qualify for the Olympics. He did so through the 2019 South Asian Games in Nepal. The olympian’s achievement was followed by an outpouring of love and encouragement from across the country, with people taking to social media to commend the athlete’s performance. Several prominent celebrities sent out tweets lauding Arshad as well. From Humayun Saeed to Asim Azhar, here’s a list of celebrity reactions to Arshad making history. Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem kept Pakistan's hopes alive of securing at least one medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 after topping his group in the qualification round. Arshad’s 85.16-metres throw was the third-best overall after India’s Neeraj Chopra (86.65m) and Germany's Johannes Vetter (85.64m). Chopra, the 2018 Commonwealth champion, went through to the final of the men's javelin with his first throw of the morning, while world leader Vetter also advanced. They will be joined by Finland's Lassi Etelätalo, whose first attempt of 84.50m, a season's best, granted him passage to the medal round. In the other qualifying group, Czech's Jakub Vadlejch produced a personal best throw of 84.93m guaranteeing him a place in the final on Saturday. Germany's Julian Weber punched his place into the medal round with an 84.41m throw. Nadeem finished above Webber and Vadlejch to win his group and a place in the medal round that will take place on August 7. Nadeem, the 24-year-old from Mian Chunnu in the Khanewal District of Punjab, received a standing ovation from his coach and is being widely celebrated in Pakistan that has already seen nine of its 10 athletes crash out already.
