Beachwood Drive Los Angeles Episode 66 Beachwood Drive is the gateway to the world-famous Hollywood sign and it’s just about as close to the sign you can get before you’d have to hike. (09:55) Beachwood Drive cuts through the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood which is a community in the Hollywood Hills. The upper portion of Beachwood Canyon is the Hollywoodland community that was advertised in the 1920s by the Hollywood Sign. The neighborhood features its own market, cafe, private mailbox rental, florist and stables. The neighborhood of Hollywoodland began in 1923 when two developers purchased 500 acres of land nestled at the foot of Mt. Lee, just above Hollywood. The hillside was covered with oak trees, holly bushes, greasewood, and poppies. Ferns grew under the trees and there were natural springs where visitors would get their water. To advertise their housing development, the Hollywood sign was erected. There were four more letters of the original sign which read “HOLLYWOODLAND”. The 13 letters were illuminated at night by 4,000 incandescent bulbs meant to shine so brightly they could be seen by all of Los Angeles below to build interest in the real estate development. Notable past and present residents of the neighborhood include Kevin Bacon, Ned Beatty, Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Chaplin, Anthony Kiedis, Heath Ledger, Bela Lugosi, Madonna, Keanu Reeves, Margot Robbie, Axl Rose, Andy Samberg, Jessica Simpson, Harry Styles, Peter Tork, Robert Townsend, Jack Webb and Forest Whitaker.
