Although some cognitive changes can occur normally with aging, memory decline and dementia are not inevitable. This program will define dementia, review reversible causes of cognitive impairment, and consider when changes may be a sign of progressive dementia. There will also be discussion about how to support a family member exhibiting symptoms, including types of professional help available. Lynn Schaefer '91 is director of neuropsychology at Nassau University Medical Center on Long Island. She holds academic appointments as clinical professor of psychiatry (NYITCOM) and as clinical associate professor of rehabilitation (Stony Brook Medicine).
