When we play Braid, we get to watch as Tim rewinds time and pulls off other causality-defying stunts. But what if you were actually living in the world of Braid? You wouldn't get to see all the rewinds, failed attempts, and overwritten histories, you would remember only the final cut of Tim's actions. "Tim and the Princess lounge in the castle garden, laughing together, giving names to the colorful birds. Their mistakes are hidden from each other, tucked away between the folds of time, safe." Now, thanks to the magic of video-editing, you can see what it would really look like to watch the events of Braid from the perspective of an external observer (like if you were a rabbit or goomba, going about your business in one of Braid's levels), with Tim's rewinds and edits to the timeline "tucked away between the folds of time". Specifically, here's what's in the video: 0:00 - Introducing the concept and explaining what you'll be seeing in more detail. 3:50 - We start with World 4 because it's definitely the craziest; Tim teleports vertically up and down the screen seemingly at random, and moves to the right at a fixed, constant velocity. (An external observer would never see Tim stand still in World 4 because whenever he stands still, time pauses!) As always, note the interesting way that the clouds work in level 4:41 -- rather than speeding up and slowing down the world, Tim himself appears to be either slowed down or sped up, so that everything adds up to that same constant rightward velocity. 6:08 - In World 3, Tim no longer teleports around the screen and no longer blazes through levels at a constant velocity. But there are still plenty of paradoxes created by the sparkly-green, time-immune objects, which appear to teleport randomly (actually in response to Tim's unseen meddling with time). 9:50 - World 5 is similar to World 3, but a bit more comprehensible since you get to see some of Tim's "tucked away between the folds of time" actions via the recorded movements of his shadow-self. You still don't get the full picture, though, since there are many situations where multiple layered rewinds are occurring on top of each other. 13:03 - Recapping the footage we've seen so far, and explaining why World 6 is different -- it ALREADY shows events from the perspective of an external observer like a goomba or a rabbit in one of the levels. So instead, I try to show things from Tim's internal perspective -- what would World 6 look like if it was more consistent with the rest of the game in this respect? 14:50 - World 6 from Tim's internal perspective would look very different -- the "slow motion ring" is also slowing down Tim's thoughts and perceptions, so when Tim is near the ring, the outside world appears to speed up by 5x! Pay special attention to when Tim moves closer & further to the ring around 15:20 -- this scene took forever to edit by slicing up the period 15:20 - 15:50 into many different segments all sped up by a slightly different amount, but what I am trying to approximate is a situation where Tim's movement speed is constant (and ideally the song in the background would sound perfectly normal / undistorted throughout), while the world speeds up the closer Tim gets to the ring. If you guys really like this video, maybe I could make a follow-up video where we see what we can do with World 1, or we check out what some of the levels in "More Now Than Ever" look like, when multiple simultaneous time-powers are engaged. Or maybe there are other games (perhaps "Four Sided Fantasy"?) that would also be interesting to examine with the power of video editing.
