During my recent Thanksgiving trip to Boston, I was able to spend some time visiting my former stomping grounds at Old South Church and record some repertoire there. This was recorded on 11/26/25. Everett Titcomb was a Boston-based organist, choir director, and composer during the early to middle part of the twentieth century. Although initially raised Unitarian, he was introduced to the musical traditions of the episcopal Church at an early age and was a boy chorister at St. Jame's Episcopal Church in Amesbury. As an adult he served as organist and choirmaster of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Boston. Though such luminaries as Dudley Buck and Eugene Thayer were among his musical influences, Titcomb was an Anglo-Catholic shaped by the Oxford Movement. As such, plainsong played a prominent role in his organ and choral compositions. Among those is "Puer natus est" ("A Boy is Born," the first of "Four Improvisations on Gregorian Themes." The chant is presented simply over a series of sustained chords at the outset. This is followed by a sustained buildup to full organ with the chant accompanied by jazzed-inflected harmonies. At the climax the chant is stated in a chorale-like fashion, followed by a snippet of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" (itself derived from chant. An extended decrescendo leading to a partial reprise of the opening material brings the work to a close. BUY ME A COFFEE 👉 buymeacoffee.com/georgesargeant #OrganMusic #Christmas #GregorianChant
