In part 2 of my return to Frenchman's Cap, I reached the summit on day 2 and took in the stunning 360-degree views from the top of the world! It was busy up there, but I had the top of the mountain to myself for a while before I headed back down to Lake Tahune for a swim and an early night. The next day, I made good time back to the Lake Vera Hut. I arrived there just after midday, so after having some lunch and packing the gear I had left there earlier, I decided to continue on to the carpark. I walked about 22km and was slowing down a bit by the time I reached the carpark just on dusk. I camped there for the night and slept like the dead! My first walk to Frenchman's cap in 2006 was the biggest physical challenge I had ever achieved. I always had the idea of returning there and this trip, sailing Bellamy to Tasmania, gave me the opportunity to see if I could do it again - 20 years later... I met a lot of amazing people on this walk and their experiences, as wide and varied as they were, created a common bond because we all shared the love we have for the Tasmanian wilderness. Dick Smith first walked to Frenchman's Cap in 2007 with Paddy Pallin. He was mortified by the mud in the Loddon Plains and the environmental damage caused by hikers trying to forge their way through the mud. I can say from first-hand experience that the money he donated to help build the section of track to bypass the mud and to build the new Tahune Hut, has improved the experience for those who would go anyway and has allowed a lot more people to do the walk, who may not have considered trying.
