On Wednesday, the West Valley School Board voted that it will not renew the teaching contract of a high school Spanish teacher after he read aloud a racial slur from the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" in class. "It came from a student-initiated question about the book. It was a very thought-provoking question, and as a professional, I felt it was necessary to address," said the teacher, Matthew Mastronardi, at a small press conference last week. At the meeting, fiery testimonies from community members in support of Mastronardi were addressed to the West Valley School Board. "My son and his classmates have started a petition.
