Calypso, Immortal. Odyssey 5.203-209 “Calypso, Immortal” is a complex character, like Circe. She has a gorgeous island paradise where the deeply troubled Odysseus lands, and they are together for 7 years. One day, after a meal, she asks him if he still wants to go, and offers him immortality if he wants to stay. But he wants to go home (and will slaughter people, in his rage). So, she packs him food, clothes, wine, etc., they spend one more joyful night together, she bathes him and dresses him, and helps him find trees and materials to build a raft, and many days later sends him off with a gentle warm wind. She does not cry. One imagines she will continue singing and weaving & enjoying her fragrant lush island (as she is described doing). For the song I want to inject in the passion and joy she is offering him: Blood of Zeus, Son of Laertes, much resourceful Odysseus, Thus so, home to your dear native land immediately now do you wish to go? Yet, even so, may you fare well. If, however in your heart you knew how much pain it is your fate to fulfill before you come to your native land, You would remain here and keep this house with me, And you would be immortal.
