In this chapter, Greg Doney explains bottom-up therapy — an approach to trauma recovery that begins with the body and nervous system rather than thoughts alone. Bottom-up therapies work with sensation, movement, and physiological regulation to resolve trauma stored in the body. Trauma often bypasses conscious memory and is stored as implicit, bodily responses. This helps explain why insight, reframing, or positive thinking may not stop physical reactions such as anxiety, shutdown, hypervigilance, or emotional flooding. By calming the nervous system and completing interrupted survival responses, bottom-up therapy allows the body to exit defence mode, resolve the Cell Danger Response, and support long-term regulation and healing. ▶ Watch the full Healing Trauma at the Cellular Level series: • Healing Trauma At The Cellular Level ▶ Learn more about trauma recovery at Goodsky: https://goodsky.com.au About the Author: Greg Doney is a trauma recovery specialist and the founder of Goodsky Mental Health Retreat.
