Unlike Western philosophy with its dualistic perspective of good versus evil, the Vedic perspective is a balance of what they call the operators in the world - creation, maintenance, and destruction. One is not better than the other; they're all required for evolution. You need the flower to grow and bloom all summer, and then it has to fade away so the soil can rest and life can begin again in the spring. We can all get a little out of balance. Am I in a highly creative phase but going so fast I'm not pouring in the requisite energy? Or desperately holding onto things no longer relevant? Or maybe there isn't enough destruction of old relationships that should be let go of? Nature's always going to have its way, whether our individuality complies with it or not. So how do I practically revere things that are destructive or ugly, that I'm not as keen about? That can mean noticing the decomposition of a log and finding the beauty in it as much as in a thriving redwood. I walk around an urban forest every day, and there's so much that many of us don't want to see, because most of us don't always have cash on us to give to every person we meet on the streets who could use it, or we don't always have food to give them. But we all have something, at the very least, a smile, a little prayer, or a wish for them. A few months ago, on Canal Street, a disheveled couple approached me asking where the Target was. And I love giving directions to anyone who needs them, because I like to be helpful when I can, but I had no idea there even was a Target in SoHo. She could tell that I legitimately didn't know where it was and said, "Thanks for just stopping." She was so deeply grateful I wasn't blowing her off. People just want to be seen. You don't even have to have the information for them, but to just stop and give them an honest reply - you never really know the little, in essence, free ways you can potentially better someone else's life by simply seeing them, revering them, honoring them as you would hope to be honored.
