Memorial Day Weekend is typically the unofficial start to Summer. Many people are enjoying the holiday weekend with their friends and family, having cookouts or going to the beach. This weekend is the season opener for Steam Operations at various Railroads in the United States. This for many years was the Steam Engine Season open at the Arcade & Attica Railroad. For the first time since 2017, 8 years ago, almost a year after Arcade & Attica 18 resurfaced from its 1472 Day Rebuild, it would lead its Official Season opener excursions at the Arcade & Attica kicking off the season. While Dynamo Productions had a photo charter there earlier in May, this was the first official weekend. All 3 days 18 would operate a Train at 1 PM, departing Arcade Bound for Curriers. Saturday it was rainy, Sunday it was hazy, and Monday we had the sun. Join me trackside, as we begin the summer season chasing 18 over 3 day, through the Village of Arcade, and Country and farmlands of New York. Listen to that Canadian National 4 chime echo across the Hill's of New York, as well as 18 working on those grades. I yet again chased with with Bison Rail Photography the first few days. I ran into @CoasterFan2105 @CptnRetro @mnorthem and various others trackside those three days. The Arcade & Attica 18, is a 2-8-0 Consolidation type Steam Locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company in 1920 at the Cooke Works in Patterson New Jersey. It was originally built for Export to Cuba, which never happened. It would then go to Michigan, and would change railroads multiple times. It was purchased by the Arcade & Attica Railroad in 1962, and has operated ever since. I first saw this engine in 1997, when I rode behind it with my family. I would not see it again until 2017. Right before the 2018 season began, an issue was found which delayed 18's return that year. After a few months, it was announced that 18 would undergo its 1472 day inspection early. In 2024, after a multi year rebuild, 18 returned to excursion service, with the Welcome Back 18 weekend. Right now, I have 2 weeks till my next Steam Train adventure, which if all goes well will be Nickel Plate Road 765 this this years Tri-State. If all goes well in June I will be See Thomas and #2102 again. the end of the summer I will be back at Arcade & Attica to ride behind 18. Looking to the rest of the year #4014 is finally in the cards again, and I am awaiting a few other schedules. I am hoping to make my way back down south this year to see #1702 #4501 and #630 as well as looking at trying to squeeze #1309 in.
