The Office of Interprofessional Simulation (OIPS) is a joint venture between the UAB Health System and the University and its Health Schools including the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Optometry, Dentistry, and Public Health and the College of Arts and Sciences. The mission of OIPS is to embed simulation-based techniques and tools in education and training for the UAB community with the goal of improving both patient care outcomes and efficiency in providing care. OIPS provides facilitator development, consulting support aimed at strengthening simulation activities and course development, and facilitation of simulation experiences with technical expertise. The vision of the Office is to dramatically improve learning, patient outcomes and efficiency at UAB and be an international leader in applying simulation to education, training, patient care delivery and research. The environment in which we work demands that we improve quality and efficiency at the same time, and this means that we must train our health care professionals, both those in training and those in practice, to work cooperatively and effectively in delivering care, and to be aware and supportive of the roles of each member of the teams that take care of patients. If we are to survive, much less thrive, in view of the challenges facing health care institutions, we have to succeed at interprofessional collaboration. And if we are to successfully train and retrain the personnel necessary for providing care to the patient populations for which we are responsible, we have to be leaders in applying the best training techniques, notably including simulation. Simulation allows persons to experience a representation of a real event for the purpose of practicing, learning, evaluating, testing or gaining understanding of systems or human actions (Eppich, 2006). One of the benefits of simulation is that it allows learners to make mistakes in a simulated environment without causing harm to real patients. Simulation puts patients first. Simulation can be delivered through several different modalities, such as task trainers, high fidelity manikins, standardized or simulated patients, and combinations of two or more of these modalities, which are commonly referred to as hybrid simulations. The Office also recognizes the importance of simulation in actual clinical settings, which is accomplished through in-situ simulations in patient rooms, in waiting rooms, and outpatient clinics. This simulation activity allows for investigation of systems of care and naturally lends itself to improving quality of care. Simulation can also be delivered at the individual, team and system level and be tailored to both educational and system-based priorities. Students, faculty, and health system employees can participate in simulation activities at one of the four simulation centers across the UAB campus, to include Quarterback Tower, the Learning Resource Center, Volker Hall, and the Pediatric Simulation Center at Children’s of Alabama. The Office is available to all departments at UAB and all clinical units within the UAB Health System. If you want to utilize simulation or improve on your existing simulation programs, please contact the Office of Interprofessional Simulation at simulation@uab.edu or visit our website at www.uab.edu/simulation.
