After posting a video about how to insulate a solid wall in the UK, many comments told me to check out aerogel insulation. I did some research and discovered Spacetherm by Proctor Group, who are based near where I live and they supply the UK construction industry with a variety of high-tech membranes. Spacetherm is made using aerogel. It is both hydrophobic and vapour open. That means it can be fixed directly onto a solid wall and it will breathe, so dampness and mould won't build up behind the insulation. Spacetherm is probably the most thermally efficient, and therefore the thinnest, insulation available in the UK right now, although at a cost.
