Japanese American incarceration survivors share stories at Sacramento museum

A sold-out event at the California Museum in Sacramento brought renewed attention to the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II through rare firsthand accounts. Christine and Stan Umeda, who were children when their families were forcibly incarcerated by the U.S. government, shared stories of years spent in assembly centers and incarceration sites across the country. They described forced displacement, life behind barbed wire, and the loss of constitutional rights, noting that many of those incarcerated were U.S. citizens who were never charged with any crime. Their son, Greg Umeda, now works at the California Museum educating visitors about this history, often speaking to schoolchildren.
