Afan Valley Bike Shed having announced Orange Bikes Demo Day on Saturday 14th October, I took the opportunity to try out an Orange Four. Then compared the ride quality with my Rocky Mountain Altitude. The Orange Four was the £5600 Factory model so had the Fox Kashima coated forks and rear shock and SRAM 1x11 (not the new 1 x 12). The Race face bottom bracket was definitely on its way out and creaked and groaned its way up the climbs. The front end of the bike seemed way too low for me and if this is aimed at the lighter riding trail centre rider rather than a full-on XC racer then I would be popping a spacer or two under the stem to get more upright. I know low gives more weight on the front wheel and therefore traction but it just felt too low this as always with geometry is a personal set-up issue. I think I've learned that with a demo ride it really is worth taking the time to set up the bike's saddle height, Sag, tire pressure, handlebar height even stem reach based on your preferences. I had to stop riding after Jim Crow descent as there was way too much air in the tyres probably inflated to 40 psi and the fork was only giving me 15% sag and the rear shock needed the rebound setting slowed down as it was pogoing around. Even these small tweaks instantly changed the ride quality and I was soon feeling it rather than fighting it. When I jumped back on the Altitude with its 'glide over anything' suspension feel (and I pulled this info off the Rocky Mountain site "Smoothlink™ suspension is efficient yet supple when you’re on the pedals and across a wide range of gears. It features a controlled end-stroke and a rate curve that feels more capable than the travel would suggest. This four-bar suspension design philosophy is centred on ride characteristics; each bike platform we develop balances variables like anti-squat, axle path, chain growth, rate curve, anti-rise, etc. to achieve the legendary Rocky Mountain ride feel.") So is it a trade-off of ride quality going to a single pivot design from a four-bar but gaining in lower maintenance? I mean I've taken the whole rear suspension system apart on the Rocky Mountain to deep-clean and re-grease the bushings and what a puzzle it always turns out to be. I was never clever enough or patient enough to learn how to do the Rubiks cube. Putting everything back together in the right order is key and had to back-track when I fitted the shock too early. This made me think about the joys of an Orange single pivot. Push out one sealed bearing push back in a new sealed bearing. To sum up, all these bikes are amazing. The nuances of different geometries and suspension designs mustn't in my humble opinion distract from the fun factor that I get. I ride these same trails on my hardtail and although that experience is purest and direct there's so much outright buzz from smashing over gnarly descents, popping and hopping and at the same time keeping your retinas from detaching. Have fun! I did. ****SUPPORT THE CHANNEL******* If you enjoy these uploads of our riding endeavors and would like to help support the channel, you can now do this directly and buy me a coffee. https://ko-fi.com/thebikeroom8167 *****LINKS to Reasonably priced Gear that I really do use***** Gear (Please note that these links I've popped down below, are affiliate links meaning if you purchase items via these links I get a small percentage which will be put towards making future vids for the channel).
