Equine Mobilization and Stretching: promoting athleticism and health in your equine partner 10 | Hip Mobilization/Tuck *exercise begins at 45 sec This is the hip tuck and mobilization. This is the final stretch in the series and is intended to be done as the last one as it builds on the other work, as well as can be the most difficult for many horses if they do not have regular bodywork. This move can cause reflexive tightening and I would not recommend it for horses that have any tension in their top line, backs or any other overt injuries or soreness for the reason that it will create more tension not release it if they are not properly prepped for it. If you find this one difficult, go back to the #3: Wither ROM, #4: Rib ROM or #5: Abdominal Engager and play with those until your horse becomes more comfortable in there body tissue. You want to have a response that the horse tucks his butt up and under himself, but it should look and feel like an engagement of the muscles rather than a reflexive tension. The engagement will be beneficial whereas the reflexive action will bring tension and resistance. Because this can activate hidden areas of soreness the horses’ can be quicker to react than normal. This means that safety is your number one priority and if there is any doubt in your horses comfort-ability I would back off. This exercise is used to engage the hip flexors, and provide a great release for the top line, but also provide core engagement at the same time! __________________________________________ I have shared these videos as they are the most common ‘stretches’ that I give to owners following a bodywork session, but are beneficial for most horses (**Always consult with and clear any stretching or mobilization with your veterinarian prior to starting. This is especially important with injury or neurological conditions.) *Remember to read the stretching/mobilization guideline here before beginning: http://www.eqequinetherapy.ca/Stretch... I hold no claim that these stretches are fully original in nature, I have modified what I have learned from what works best for me. I have learned them from a number of teachers throughout my education and if you are interested in learning more about equine therapy you can check out my education at http://www.eqequinetherapy.ca/EQ%20Ed...
