Equine Mobilization and Stretching: promoting athleticism and health in your equine partner 3 | Wither ROM *ROM begins at 45 sec The wither is a very commonly found area of tension in ridden horses. Not only is it the junction between the spine and front limb, but we also strap tack on to this area as well as adding our weight to the mix! This video shows an exaggerated version of this exercise so don’t be afraid to keep the movements quite small. The area of the spine you are contacting, the wither, is formed by bones that are deep in the tissue and the points you can feel under the skin are long protrusions off the main bone. These act like long levers, and in this way, any movement that happens at the end of the lever is magnified by the time it reaches the main bone. So, less is very much more in this case! You will be getting much more done that you think. Remember that any amount of movement may be too much for some horses, so just resting your hands in the area may be enough. The key is to keep your hands, arms and breath relaxed and soft. This will encourage the horse to mirror you. If you are unable to touch this area or get any movement without resistance, it may be a good indication for you to follow up with a professional such as a saddle fitter or bodyworker. _________________________________________ I have shared these videos as they are the most common ‘stretches’ that I give to owners following a bodywork session, but are beneficial for most horses (**Always consult with and clear any stretching or mobilization with your veterinarian prior to starting. This is especially important with injury or neurological conditions.) *Remember to read the stretching/mobilization guideline here before beginning: http://www.eqequinetherapy.ca/Stretch... I hold no claim that these stretches are fully original in nature, I have modified what I have learned from what works best for me. I have learned them from a number of teachers throughout my education and if you are interested in learning more about equine therapy you can check out my education at http://www.eqequinetherapy.ca/EQ%20Ed...
