Equine Mobilization and Stretching: promoting athleticism and health in your equine partner 5 | Abdominal Engager *exercise begins at 45 sec The abdominal muscles are essential for correct posture, balance and any level of collection or engagement. Just like in us, the core musculature provides support for the surrounding structures – both skeletal and musculature. It is an area that is often overlooked in horses, along with an excess focus on the back. The foundation of a healthy back lies in the horses’ 6 – pack! This exercise is used to activate the muscles of the underline, including all the abdominal muscles which are essential to a functioning back. When the underline (or the belly) contracts, this area shortens – meaning the back has to lift. A horse that is moving through their whole body must be able to ‘turn off’ or relax the back muscles as well as ‘turn on’ the muscles of the underline. The goal is to activate the horses’ core with the three moves; each ideally showing a slow deep lift with a rolling like muscle contraction of the underline that lifts the back from the wither to the low back. It is a great posture tune up and it really shows if your horse is becoming sore due to any increases in work load or other issues. It will also highlight the ability of your horse to bend both directions equally. What you find one the ground most often compares with what you find under saddle! Please don’t forget the safety guidelines on this one! __________________________________________ I have shared these videos as they are the most common ‘stretches’ that I give to owners following a bodywork session, but are beneficial for most horses (**Always consult with and clear any stretching or mobilization with your veterinarian prior to starting. This is especially important with injury or neurological conditions.) *Remember to read the stretching/mobilization guideline here before beginning: http://www.eqequinetherapy.ca/Stretch... I hold no claim that these stretches are fully original in nature, I have modified what I have learned from what works best for me. I have learned them from a number of teachers throughout my education and if you are interested in learning more about equine therapy you can check out my education at http://www.eqequinetherapy.ca/EQ%20Ed...
