The question might be best asked what type of support groups are there for people with prediabetes. This video had the potential to be very long when I first sat out to research it. But I decided to pare it down a bit and give you my opinion of the support groups that are available but let you decide which direction you should go. The first place I went to when I was diagnosed was, of course, the internet. Don’t we all? I suggest your first stop for support group information would be the American Diabetes Association. Not only do they keep a comprehensive list of support groups, but also provide forums, educational videos and so much more for those of us with diabetes. It really is an awesome website. I am an advocate for support groups and I prefer them to be a face to face encounter, but I also understand not all communities have groups and some people would rather not participate in that setting. Online support groups are becoming much more common and quite frankly, in my opinion, very successful. I am not going to recommend one forum over another, but a quick google search of “prediabetes support groups” yielded about 5 million results. I am sure you can find one. Just make sure it is reputable by asking others about it online. A really good way to get questions answered about prediabetes is to join a community forum. This is similar to a support group online but you don’t really “meet” you simply type in a question and others in the forum will leave answers. It is a good way to find out if what you are experiencing is “normal.” Again, be careful about forums, there are trolls in there, but find a good one and it can be a very useful asset. There is certainly a plethora of resources for you out there. You just need to decide what type of support you need, get information about it and act on that information. Keep educating yourself! Support groups are a great way to do just that.
