The book of Judges highlights the lawless era of Israel’s history from the conquest of Canaan to the establishment of the monarchy. The history details the exploits of national heroes called “judges”, who were appointed by God to rescue Israel from nations that oppressed them. This lesson exposes believers to theconsequences of sin and absence of leadership. When Joshua and the elders that outlived him died, there was a great leadership vacuum in the nation and the Israelites lost their spiritual commitment and devotion to God. Instead of enjoying freedom and prosperity in the Promised Land, Israel went into an era of distress, disgrace and darkness by their retrogressive lifestyle of partial obedience or failure to completely eliminate the enemy nations, unequal yoke in marriage to the heathen and recurrent descent into idolatry. Thus, the Israelites became captives soon after Joshua’s demise. Theirs was a vicious cycle: from sin to suffering to supplication to salvation and again to sin, which proved the futility of hoping to enjoy the blessings of God consistently while living in flagrant or partial obedience to His commands. This study x-rays the consequences of Israel’s unfaithfulness and disobedience, the state of the nation after the death of Joshua, the choice of Judah to lead the other tribes in battle and the commission of judges over the nation.
