With no teaching priest, no divinely appointed king or a central government, the children of Israel had no physical leader to guide their choice and path in life. Thus, the people slid back into idolatry and apostasy, and repeatedly showed half-hearted repentance that never got them a lasting respite. This serves as a warning to believers who are inconsistent in their walk with God. Rising and falling into sin results in grievous defeats and miserable failures. The emergence of judges in Israel was a direct response of God to the cry of the people for deliverance from their oppressive enemies. The book of Judges recorded seven instances of rebellion, retribution, repentance and restoration (Judges 2:11-16; 3:7-9,12- 15; 4:1-4; 6:1-10; 10:6; 13:1). A cursory look at the profiles of the thirteen judges reveals that all were men except Deborah. This study focuses on the first four judges, including Deborah, who encouraged Barak to lead the army of Israel that defeated Sisera, the captain of the Canaanites’ army.
