In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks” , I take a 6 mile circular walk (with a detour) starting & finishing at Janesmoor Pond (near Fritham). Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan. I park my car at the Forestry Commission car park at Janesmoor Pond and head South to the entrance to the Longbeech Camp site at which point I follow a cycle track Eastwards between the Long Beech Enclosure (to the South) & the King's Garn Gutter Enclosure (to the North). I continue Eastwards, crossing Colmeer Gutter (a free flowing stream) and on to the Sir Walter Tyrrell pub. There I head South and explore the Rufus Stone – the alleged spot where King William II (King Rufus) was fatally wounded with an arrow during a hunting accident (or was it murder?) on 2nd August 1100. At this point, walkers have the option of doing a shorter 4.5 mile route (details in the video) however I continue initially Eastwards through woods and then South around Malwood Farm before going through the underpass under the A31 to my next destination – the iron age hillfort at Malwood Castle. There is not too much to see of the fort as the inner circle is in private grounds but the outer bank can easily be made out from the road. I then head back to the Rufus Stone and join another cycle track that takes me Westwards. Along the way I see if I can find Stanlidge Pond at the edge of Stricknage Wood and also get to enjoy some stunning views to the North. When I get to the minor road that goes to Fritham, I head North back to the car park at Janesmoor pond before heading off to the Royal Oak pub at Fritham for some light refreshments.
