On 8 January 2026, a devastating wildfire destroyed large parts of Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary in Stanford, Western Cape, South Africa. The damage to our facilities is extensive. Several big cat camps and key infrastructure were destroyed, including our electrical fencing. All big cats have been evacuated for their own safety to partner sanctuaries across South Africa. Our sanctuary is home to big cats rescued from captive and abusive environments, including tigers, lions, leopards and other wild cats.
