Praise God! The World’s Hatred (18-25). Such a warning to the apostles that we see play out even today- the world HATES God. Hates Jesus. Why? The devil hates God. So, when we belong to God when we are obedient to Him and Him alone- the devil hates us and he knows in the end he loses so he tries to steal our joy, tries to make us doubt. He causes terrible pain and heartache. But just as we are targeted in this world and will suffer in this world because of it- we have the promises of God’s protection and in the end- we are with Him. We are often accused of being hateful but it is transference. They hate Truth and when we bear Truth- we are hated for it. If we are amiable and tolerant of lies- then we are embraced. It is a hard temptation to fight- we all want to be liked… And to be hated is hard. But what is worse? Being hated in this world by people who can only harm our bodies? Or to be hated by God and spending eternity without Him? Jesus straight up commands us to love. When the world denies this- we know that they do not know Truth. So, they hated Him first. They hate us because we stand in Him. The values and goals of the world are in opposition to God- Guzik Because Jesus came- and we have His Word- there is no excuse for their sinfulness. His grace is for everyone- if only they would choose it. “By both his life and his words he rebukes human sin and condemns it. He uncovers the inner corruption and hypocrisy of men, and they react violently to the disclosure.” (Tenney) In reference to the religious leaders- “The irony of his quotation is clear: the men who posted as the champions of the Law were fulfilling the prophecy concerning the enemies of God’s servant.” (Tenney) The Coming Rejection (26-27). The Holy Spirit- Spirit of Truth, come from the Father. Even though the world will hate, reject and persecute the disciples and other future believers- we have an Advocate who provides, empowers and helps us. Especially the disciples- they were the first and the reason we HAVE Jesus’ Word. #DailyBibleVerse #BibleReading #GospelReading
