The next big step for Nashville Steam Locomotive No. 576 has arrived! After years of dedicated restoration work, Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway No. 576 is preparing for a critical milestone: its hydrostatic test. A hydrostatic test (often called a "hydro test") involves filling the locomotive’s boiler completely with water and then pressurizing it well over its normal operating pressure. The process is conducted slowly and carefully, monitoring for any signs of leaks, material deformation, or structural weakness – a major requirement before steam can return to the engine for the first time in over 70 years. Once we pass the hydro test, No. 576 will be readied for live steam tests and one step closer to full operation. Follow along as the Nashville Steam Preservation Society prepares this iconic locomotive for its comeback.
