I thought I had a new and novel idea to share with the world. However, it turns out that just because I don’t know about something, it doesn’t mean it hasn’t been around for a while, maybe a long-while. It’s the idea of a half birthday. Honoring or in some way acknowledging a person exactly halfway to their next birthday. I discovered it’s done by some when their regular birthday falls near a major holiday, the celebration of which might overshadow their birthday. But I propose to extend the idea way beyond that. It’s especially useful for me and my geezer friends. For a number of reasons. First, as you get older you have less time to say nice things to good friends. More about that in a minute and it’s not a ghoulish thought it’s a reality that needs to be dealt with. Second it's going to be a huge pleasant surprise… and that's always a good thing. Third the half birthday doesn't have a new number, a new age, associated with it so you can have a nice celebration without elevating into the next age level and being tagged with a new bigger number. Back to the notion of fleeting moments. The reality, without being morbid, is that many of the things I do, I might be doing for the last time. I don’t know that I’ll be around for your next birthday… or that you’ll be around for mine. So celebrating every 6 months at this point in life makes sense to me. When you get to be my age you tend to think in shorter time frames then you once did. I went to get my driver's license renewed a while back. I wore my youngest looking outfit that I can reasonably…I mean no tie ‘died shirt or sandals… reasonably wear and walked as straight and tall as I could. Briskly. Listened closely so I won’t show signs of impaired hearing when they called my name. I didn’t want to do anything to call attention to my age. I was afraid they were going to make me do some kind of old man test and I might not get my driver's license or worse yet have to be retested. Well they didn’t bat an eyelash and gave me the normal 4 year extension. When I looked at my new expiration date I thought holy smokes there’s a good chance my driver's license is going to outlive me. It's a normal thought. Comes up all the time… medical procedures…I’ve heard people say, I decided not to get a double whitening super crown yacht buying tooth replacement… At my memorial service, I don’t want to have the best-looking set of teeth of everybody there I’m looking forward to watching the Olympics in Paris on TV, but am not making hard plans for the 2028 Los Angeles games and certainly don’t expect to see the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia (I’d be 97). But that’s not a morbid thought. It’s just reality and a reminder to thoroughly enjoy the Paris version of an event I’ve followed since I was a kid. Bob Richards, the first Wheaties poster boy “the Flying Parson” was a pole vaulter from my hometown who won the Bronze Medal in the 1948 games in London, then became the first ever to win back-to-back Gold medals in Helsinki and Melbourne. He knew how to pole vault. Well, I thought I’d give the idea of the half-year birthday a try. A good friend of mine…instrumental in helping me adapt to a new home following my wife’s death… was born on December 7. So, I made a half year card with some simple software I have and sent it June 8th. Half-way to her next birthday. Her response was everything I hoped for and gave me another chance to thank her for all she’s done for me. I’m going to send out some more. I’ve now added half birthday dates to my calendar for a dozen people who I think would really appreciate and enjoy it. Well that’s it. Another version of A Geezer’s Perspective. Now I can move on to my next big project… a nap.
