How Research Moves Hope Forward in Pediatric Leukemia In 2023, the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation committed $200,000 to support a team of leading pediatric cancer researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Children’s Hospital Colorado working to improve outcomes for children with a high-risk form of leukemia called Ph-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This type of leukemia is especially challenging because it has a high chance of coming back after standard treatment. When relapse happens, options are limited—and survival rates drop sharply. The research we’re funding is helping scientists develop a new kind of immune-based therapy called CAR T cells. The goal is to teach a child’s own immune cells to better recognize and attack leukemia cells, even after other treatments have failed. Before a new therapy can ever be tested in children, it must go through extensive laboratory and safety testing. That’s the stage this research is in now. While this treatment has not yet reached clinical trials, the work supported by TLC is laying the essential groundwork to move it safely toward a first-in-human study. This kind of “bench-to-bedside” research is how medical breakthroughs happen—and why survival rates for childhood leukemia have improved so dramatically over the past several decades. For children whose leukemia returns, innovation is urgently needed. TLC is proud to support research that pushes science forward and brings new hope closer to the clinic.
